For fifteen years, Mr. Nico has studied the art of drumming and music. Having played in school big bands, orchestras, and drum lines, he developed his musicianship through education and a variety of musical contexts. Mr. Nico plays and teaches a range of styles including rock, jazz, hip hop, classical, soloing, and Latin. He earned an Associates degree in Art and Human Expression at Fullerton College and his BM in Jazz and Commercial Music from Cal State Fullerton for drum set.

With over seven years of experience as a working musician, Mr. Nico teaches private lessons and regularly performs live and session work across California. His performances span numerous genres at various venues, from jazz and pop to Latin music. Notable performances include Tyler the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw in 2018, where he backed Steve Lacy, as well as Anderson .Paak’s festival in Oxnard in 2022. He has also performed at many restaurants, listening spaces, benefits, and weddings, alongside numerous jazz ensembles throughout Southern California.

Mr. Nico is currently a drum instructor at WePlay Music, where he teaches students ranging from beginners to advanced. His focus is on fostering a love for music, ear training, song learning, and understanding the role of the drum set in modern music. He adapts his teaching to each student’s individual style and personality, creating a comfortable and relaxed learning environment. Mr. Nico also emphasizes the importance of practice, music reading skills, and understanding music history, ensuring that students not only improve their technique but also enjoy the process.

He has also recorded drums for various projects and performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk series. In addition to his teaching, Mr. Nico regularly performs with various groups, from jazz trios to explosive rock and pop acts.

Learning music is a unique process that teaches students valuable skills: reading music, exploring different genres, ear training, collaborating with other players, and understanding the rich history of music. Mr. Nico is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience with eager students and listeners alike.
