ABOUT THE TEACHER
PROFESSIONAL BIO
Mr. Matthew is a versatile composer and music educator with over four years of teaching experience in piano, trumpet, banjo, composition, jazz improvisation, and both classical and jazz theory. With more than 16 years of training in classical and jazz piano and trumpet, six years of banjo, and three years of vocal training, he brings a strong foundation of both performance and musicianship to his teaching.
He has performed with professional and university orchestras, concert bands, jazz ensembles, and other groups across a wide variety of styles. In addition to performance, his composition experience includes works for ensembles, electronics, film, and animation. His background allows him to guide students not only as performers but also as developing musicians with an understanding of how music is created and expressed.
As a teacher, Mr. Matthew emphasizes a balance between solid technical skills, expressive musicianship, and each student’s personal musical interests. He encourages creativity through improvisation, ear training, and theory, while also guiding students in building a strong repertoire. His teaching style is supportive and adaptable, meeting students where they are and helping them grow step by step. Students are encouraged to explore different genres, from classical to jazz to contemporary, so they can develop their own unique voice at the instrument.
With his passion for both teaching and performing, Mr. Matthew strives to create an inspiring learning environment where students feel motivated to grow as musicians and as individuals. He believes music should be both a discipline and a joy, giving every student the tools to succeed while fostering a lifelong love for music.
